Don’t Get Ahead Of Yourself
In order to effectively teach your dog tricks like this, your dog should already have a good understanding of basic obedience. This includes the basic commands such as:
- Sit
- Stay
- Come
- Lie Down
Remember to start with these basics first before you move on to any more advanced tricks.
It also helps to start with a dog who is a bit tired or mentally drained. The most optimal time to begin a dog training session is usually about 35 to 45 minutes after playtime or a walk. A nice long walk is a great way to prepare your dog for the most effective training session.
After a long walk or play time, allow your dog sufficient time to begin to relax. Once your dog is in a relaxed and comfortable state, you can begin.
It is very important for your dog’s mental and physical health that your dog receives both mental and physical exercise. This is also the case if you see that your dog is beginning to get frustrated or upset with the training experience. Do not ever punish your dog at the end of a training session as this will make it even more difficult to train your dog in the future. Always find something to reward your dog with at the end of any training session, even if your dog is not performing as you would like.
Be Patient

Let your dog go at his or her own pace and be as patient as possible while still having fun trying. Just like any dog, some dogs are able to learn certain tricks much faster than other tricks.
